Road Trip to Mt. Vernon

Yesterday was a beautiful day to jump in the car and take a drive through the country. Our destination was Mt. Vernon, a quaint and historic city in Knox County Ohio.
The downtown is full of fabulous, historic buildings.

Look at the balconies on this building that houses an antique shop. I’m thinking the third floor should be my new apartment!

The main feature of our day was the Rural Society Antique and Garden Show at Warwick Farms. You know you’re in the country when you turn onto a dirt road and your GPS no longer knows where you are.
But around the bend…
And it just kept getting better.
The displays of home and garden decor set up by the vendors were drool-worthy.
The farm and it’s gardens were beautiful

AND there were chickens!

The Wedding March: A Delicious Day

A wedding is an awesome opportunity to support local businesses. As part of this month’s wedding focus we will be featuring some of the shops and services around Hartville that helped to make the day so special.

In the spotlight this week are Hartville Chocolate Factory, Cakes by Debbie White, and Bev Green Catering.

The rehearsal dinner was held at The Barrel Room in North Canton. Their private room was a great place for the family and wedding party to gather and celebrate. And because they allow outside food brought in we were able to to have the fabulous food of Hartville’s own Bev Green Catering. We have used Bev for catering at Best Bib and Tucker and have been to weddings and parties she has catered. The food is always delicious and beautifully presented.

You may have noticed we have a love of desserts after reading the menu from the bridal shower. I mean really, why have one cake when you can have THREE!
Emily’s wedding cakes were made by Hartville-area resident Debbie White. She was a joy to work with and created beautiful shabby chic cakes. She was even able to pull colors from a bridesmaid dress fabric swatch.
Debbie also made mini chocolate peanut butter cakes. It was way too easy to hop off the dance floor and grab one of these babies – no forks needed!

And to top off the sweets fest we included assorted chocolates from Hartville Chocolate Factory on each table and on the cake table. Hartville Chocolate Factory has a chocolate fountain for rent and is also able to create customized chocolate bars and coins.

The Wedding March: Amy Butler/Vogue Bridesmaid Dresses

Finding bridesmaid dresses to go with the shabby chic theme was a challenge. Many of the local dress shops had cute cocktail length dresses, but the fabric types were too formal. We also tried looking for a sundress in department stores and online. On a whim Em asked if it would be possible to have dresses made. Ah-ha!

There are sooooo many patterns out there for dresses that have a vintage feel. We went with Vogue Pattern V1102.

And of course there had to be Amy Butler fabric involved. The pink green and gray in this Midwest Modern Fresh Poppies print set the color scheme for the entire wedding. We even took a picture of the the fabric and used the image in the invitations, programs, and signs.

And the best part… Big Pink Back Bows!

We really have the sewing talents of Hartville’s Betty Cassiday to thank for making this happen. She was a delight to work with and very accommodating of all of our schedules. It required only a few fittings and our out-of-town bridesmaid was able to email her measurements. She’s great at alterations too!

The Wedding March: Cocktail Hour, Games, and Coloring Books

There is always space between an afternoon ceremony and an evening reception. This is helpful for getting pictures taken, but not so fun for the guests. We filled the space with a cocktail hour and served drinks and appetizers. The Barrette Center at Walsh University has an atrium outside of their reception hall that provided ample space and seating for people to gather, relax, and celebrate.

We took cocktail hour one step further with games and coloring books for our young guests.

The Wedding March: Bathroom Baskets

Our dear friend Christa came up with the idea of placing emergency baskets in the women’s bathroom. As a Longaberger consultant she knew just the right baskets to choose and added my great-grandma’s handkerchiefs to tie in some shabby chic/vintage charm. This really helped us take care of our guests even while we were being pulled in a million directions.

The Wedding March: Doily Wrapped Programs

Today’s post shows a simple DIY way to dress up a wedding program.

The programs for the wedding were designed on our home computer using a tri-fold template in Publisher. Once printed and folded we wrapped them in 10 inch round paper doilies with enough space on each side so that the programs could easily slide in and out of the doily sleeve.

Pink, green, and gray bows finished the look and helped hold everything together.

The Wedding March: Bird Cage Card Holder

This bird cage was another of Emily’s garage sale finds. It has a little latch so the top can be opened but cards could easily be slipped through the spaces. We gave it a quick coat of spray paint and wove ribbon through the bottom so cards wouldn’t slip through the openings.

Quick, simple, and oh so pretty!
Plus, it can be re-purposed for home decor. I’m picturing it filled with pastel Easter eggs.

The Wedding March: Local Business Spolight on Pure Energy Entertainment

A wedding is an awesome opportunity to support local businesses. As part of this month’s wedding focus we will be featuring some of the shops and services that helped to make the day so special.

In the spotlight today is DJ Jerry Humes.

When Emily started planning her wedding she put her fiance, Matt, in charge of music and DJ decisions. Because Matt has spent quite a bit of time in the DJ booth himself, I knew this reception was going to be quite the party. And what a fun party it was!

My favorite part was Emily and Matt playing Jerry’s version of The Newlywed Game.

So now I’m turning over the blog to my new brother-in-law, because really who better to write a recommendation.

Jerry Humes djed our wedding reception. He is the owner/operator of Pure Energy Entertainment.

He is the perfect person to have entertain your guests as he pays attention to every detail, makes sure every moment is captured, and will keep all of your guests entertained all the way up to the final minute!

Jerry has been in the business for over 10 years. Pure Energy caters to all events: weddings, private parties, school functions, fundraisers, etc.

He is out of Stark County, but has been known to service the entire Northeast Ohio region. His phone number is 330-323-0929 and you can also easily find him on Facebook. However, make sure you contact him early as his calendar fills up twelve months in advance.

The Wedding March: Flowers, Framing, and Fantastic Glassware

In the spotlight this week are Country Flowers and Herbs, Uniontown Antique Mall, Maple Street Art Gallery, and Hartville Mercantile.

If you are looking for stunningly beautiful yet unique flowers for your wedding Jack at Country Flowers and Herbs in Hartville, Ohio is the person to see. He worked closely with Em to select flowers that matched her tastes and the feel of the wedding as well as those that were in season and in budget.

Bridesmaid bouquets of hydrangea and sedum.

The main flowers in Emily’s bouquet were Cymbidium Orchids and Nerine Lilies. The orchids were incorporated into the mother’s corsages as well.

Em’s bouquet was wrapped in a lace handkerchief and adorned with her “something borrowed” pin from her godmother.

Her break-away toss bouquet was individual sedum stems, each with a charm tied on. Ladies of all ages and marital status were invited to catch the flowers to receive their fortune (a wishbone for a wish granted, a camera for happy memories, an apple for good health, etc).

Other flowers used in the wedding were Astilbe, Hypercium Berries, and Antique Hydrangea.

A fabulous couple at Uniontown Antique Mall helped us find the glassware for the unity candle. In place of a traditional stand, Em selected a two candle stick holders for the tapers and a lovely pink Depression glass saucer for the center pillar candle.

Maple Street Art Gallery provided the framing for Emily and Matt’s guest book tree. John was able to frame the blank tree before the wedding and then added in the glass after the event. He suggested a glare-minimizing glass because the piece was so large. It now hangs beautifully in the couple’s living room!

Much of the glassware for the cake table was purchased at Hartville Mercantile, including the green platter we used to make a cake stand. Kathy was so helpful in pointing out potential pieces and kept an eye out for jars, plates, and vases for the centerpieces as well.

The Wedding March: Send Off Flags and Cowbells

In place of rice, birdseed, bubbles, etc, Emily made flags for guests to wave as she and Matt left the church. And in keeping with the bell theme, the groomsmen got to make some noise with cowbells (purchased at Tractor Supply).

To make the send off flags we used scraps left over from the table bunting and from the bridesmaid dresses. We cut out various shapes with pinking sheers.

To attach the fabric to wooden skewers we first ran a thin layer of glue on the edge.

Then we rolled the fabric around the skewer once.

From there we added a bead of hot glue and quickly rolled the fabric around again.
